WELCOME TO EDCOURSES

Our Courses are aimed at clinicians and nursing working in acute patient care settings – primarily Trauma management in the Emergency Room.

The course are made possible through funding from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity.

These courses are taught by frontline practicing Emergency Medicine consultants and senior clinicians who manage polytrauma patients during their normal working day. Our courses are designed to prepare doctors and nurses in dealing with the practical aspects of dealing with the acutely ill patients and keep you up to date with recent advances in Trauma care.

Emergency Department Courses team is made up of experienced clinicians from various frontline specialities like Emergency Medicine, Pre Hospital Medicine, Anaesthesia, Intensive care, Trauma & Orthopaedics.

The simulation courses are directed by expert clinicians.

Dr Umesh Salanke


Consultant Emergency Medicine

Umesh is the Advanced Trauma Simulation Course (ATSC) director. He is a Fellow of the College of Emergency Medicine (CEM) examines on the College of Emergency Medicine postgraduate exams and a practicing Emergency Medicine Consultant at University Hospital Birmingham (UHB). In addition he is an ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) instructor, College of Emergency Medicine simulation faculty and is involved in Major Trauma Simulation training and has an interest in Medical Simulation Training.

Dr David Yeo


Consultant Emergency Medicine

David is the Co- director for ATSC. He completed his basic training at the Royal Free Hospital, London in 1998. He is an Emergency Medicine Consultant at University Hospital Birmingham and a Fellow of the College of Emergency Medicine. He is also a faculty at College of Emergency Medicine simulation course and a College examiner. He is the Emergency Lead for Major Trauma and represents the Trust at the Birmingham, Black Country, Hereford and Worcester Trauma Network (BBCHW). Current interests include Emergency Department informatics and he has recently successfully led the implementation of the Emergency Department (ED) Oceana management system at UHB.

Mr Vibhore Gupta


Consultant Emergency Medicine

Vibhore qualified from LLRM Medical College in Meerut, India. He has a gold medal for his Masters in Surgery in 1993. He is a Fellow of the College of Emergency Medicine and Royal college of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He examines on the College of Emergency Medicine postgraduate exams. In addition he is an ATLS and ALS (Advanced Life Support) course director. He is also responsible for Emergency Department Major Incident Planning at UHB. He is the currently the Head of Medical Education (Non Deanery) at UHB.

Mr Jitender Monga


Consultant Emergency Medicine

Jitender graduated in Delhi, India in 1993 and did his Postgraduate training in Orthopaedics in 1998. He is a Fellow of College of Emergency Medicine. He is also a faculty at College of Emergency Medicine simulation course and instructs in ATLS and ALS courses. He is also an examiner for the College of Emergency Medicine for Membership & Fellowship examinations.

Dr Elaine Hardy


Consultant Emergency Medicine

Elaine completed her undergraduate training at Birmingham Medical School, having first completed a degree and PhD in Pharmacology. Qualified in 2000, Post graduate training in West Midlands. She instructs on ATLS. She is currently the research lead and lead clinician for the Emergency Nurse Practitioners in the Emergency Department.

Mrs Melanine Brown


Emergency Department Senior Sister

Mel qualified as a RGN in 1985. She is currently an Emergency Department Senior Sister and is the Emergency Planning Liaison Officer for Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Other responsibilities include Clinical Nurse Lead for Trauma and Resuscitative Care within the Emergency Department (ED). She is an APLS, Major Incidence Medical Management System (MIMMS) and British Association of Immediate Care scheme (BASICS) Instructor. In her spare time she is an Immediate Care Nurse working with the West Midlands Ambulance service and BASICS Team.

Dr Neil Abeysinghe


Consultant in Critical Care & Anaesthesia

Neil is a consultant in Critical Care & Anaesthesia at UHB. He is an ALS, ATLS and APLS Instructor with special interest in Trauma. He was a full time doctor to Staffordshire Ambulance Service (currently West Midlands Ambulance Service for the last three years) and works in their control room as clinical lead. His Interests include prehospital medicine (he has 10 yrs experience) and he was one of the first appointed Helicopter Emergency medical Services (HEMS) doctor for Midlands Air Ambulance. He is a BASICS Doctor, Instructor & Examiner and is the Medical Director of Cheshire & Shropshire Basics Scheme. Pre Hospital Medical Emergency Response Incident Teams (MERIT) team Doctor. He continues his HEMS involvement by flying on average once a week.

Dr Shiv Chavan


Consultant Anaesthetist

Shiv has been a Consultant Anaesthetist at the University Hospital Birmingham for past four years. He is fellow of Royal College of Anaesthetist and has European Diploma in Regional Anaesthesia. This is in addition to his post graduate qualifications in Anaesthesia from India. His clinical special interests are Trauma, Burn and Regional Anaesthesia. He is a faculty of ATLS, ALS, RSI and ATSC courses. He is educational supervisor for Anaesthesia trainees and delivers FRCA teaching regularly on range of Anaesthesia topics.

Dr Mahtab Siddiqui


General Practioner

Mahtab is a General Practioner with special interest in Trauma. He is also a faculty at College of Emergency Medicine simulation course.

Dr Hamid Shahzad


Consultant Emergency Medicine

Hamid is an Consultant in Emergency Medicine with special interest in Trauma and Simulation Training. He is also a faculty at College of Emergency Medicine simulation and ATLS courses.

Dr Nasir Ali


Consultant Emergency Medicine

Nasir is an Consultant in Emergency Medicine with special interest in Trauma and Simulation Training. He is also a faculty at College of Emergency Medicine simulation and ATLS courses.

OUR COURSES

Emergency Department Courses team is made up of experienced clinicians from various frontline specialities like Emergency Medicine, Pre Hospital Medicine, Anaesthesia, Intensive care, Trauma & Orthopaedics.

The simulation courses are directed by expert clinicians and are delivered in a dedicated clinical skills suite at the New Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

This is a one day trauma simulation course that prepares health care professionals on the initial management of the polytrauma patient in the Emergency Department. There is an emphasis on leadership skills in multidisciplinary team, practical skills and human factors- Accredited for 6 CPD points by College of Emergency Medicine (CEM).
2016 dates- 18th Oct – £225.

This one day unique course supplements the knowledge and practical skills of the clinician team to safely deal with patients who needs sedation to undertake clinical procedures in the emergency department e.g. joint reduction, fracture manipulation, cardio version etc. Accredited for 6 CPD points by CEM.

One day course medical high fidelity simulation course aimed at ACCS trainee/SHO`s. The course prepares to participants to deal with the regular day to day clinical cases in Emergency department.
March 2016- This course is only for West Midlands Deanery Trainees.

A one day course recognised by the College of Emergency Medicine that aims to support faculty development with an introduction to the use of high fidelity simulation training of the multidisciplinary team within the context of Emergency Medicine.
